Where AI actually saves SMEs money (and where it doesn’t)

Every week another vendor promises that AI will transform your business. For most SMEs, the honest picture is narrower and more useful: AI saves real money in a handful of specific workflow shapes, and burns money everywhere else.

The workflows where it works

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. The pattern to look for is a task that is high-volume, text-heavy, and tolerant of review: invoice data extraction, inbound email triage, first-draft report writing, support ticket categorisation. Sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

  • Document processing. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris — extracting structured data from invoices, contracts, and forms is the closest thing to a sure bet.
  • Triage and routing. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit — classifying and routing inbound messages saves hours before a human ever gets involved.
  • Drafting, not deciding. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident — AI writes the first 80% of the report; a person owns the final 20%.

Where it doesn’t

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor. Anything where a single error is expensive and hard to catch — pricing decisions, legal commitments, financial approvals — should keep a human in the loop or stay manual entirely.

A simple test

Sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. Before automating anything, ask: how many hours a month does this task consume, what does an error cost, and how would we catch one? If the hours are high and the error cost is low or catchable, it’s a candidate.
